Darrell E. Bruning, 81, of Lawton passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 4, 2015 following a lengthy illness. Private family services were held on June 9, 2015 at the Johnson – Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa. Interment followed at Kingsley Cemetery.
Darrell Eugene Bruning was born on December 12, 1933 in Kingsley, Iowa, the son of Elmer “Hap” and Ila (Southwick) Bruning. He attended and later graduated from Kingsley High School. Following his education, Darrell took a position with the railroad.
On March 14, 1953, Darrell and Phyllis Swanberg were united in marriage at Kingsley. Darrell went to work for Iowa Public Service as an insurance manager. He retired in 1994.
Darrell served as the mayor of Lawton, Iowa for 4 years. In the early years he was a Little League Baseball Coach. He enjoyed playing cards, especially Pitch and 500, crossword puzzles and walks around the high school track. He could often be found relaxing on the front porch.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis of Lawton, IA; a son, Brad Bruning of Dunlap, IA; daughters, Dawn Ebert of Washta, IA and Jackie (Herman) Poggensee of Polk City, IA; grandchildren, Kendra Ebert, Kevin Ebert, Nicole Poggensee and Doug Poggensee; one great-grandchild; sisters, Marlene (Don) Menke of Hiawatha, IA and Marilyn (Gene) Dugan of Florence, AZ; a brother, Terry (Karen) Bruning of Phoenix, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
