Gladys Grabe

Kingsley, Iowa - Gladys M. Grabe, 91, of Ames, Iowa, formerly of Kingsley and Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at the Johnson – Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley. Rev. Lorene K. Glant of Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville, Iowa will officiate. Burial will follow at the Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23 and will continue until the service.
Gladys Marie Grabe was born on June 7, 1920, the daughter of William and Minnie (Meyer) Grabe. She grew up in the Pierson, Iowa Area. She was a member and was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville, Iowa. After graduation from high school, she attended Iowa State College. Gladys graduated with a bachelor's degree in Home Economics in 1943 and received a master's degree in Home Economics Education in 1956.
She taught High School Home Economics at Jefferson, Guttenberg, East Waterloo, Spencer and Logan, Iowa. She served as an Assistant Professor and Supervising Teacher Trainer in Home Economics Education for Iowa State University for 5 years. She spent 30 years as the Home Economics Consultant for the Area Schools and Career Education Division of the Iowa Department of Education. Gladys retired in 1988 and continued to reside in Des Moines until 2004 when she moved to the Green Hills Retirement Community in Ames. Gladys was active in many state and national professional associations including Life Time Memberships in the American Home Economics Association, Association for Career Technical Education, American Vocational Association, and the Iowa Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. In addition, she was a lifetime member of the Iowa State Alumni Association.
Gladys enjoyed attending cultural events, was an avid Iowa State Cyclones fan, traveled extensively in the United States and overseas and enjoyed keeping track of her families' activities.
She is survived by her brother, Don and Lorna Grabe of Sisters, OR; nieces and nephews, Mark and Cindy Grabe of Grand Forks, ND, Dan Grabe of Kingsley, IA, Bill and Nancy Grabe of Marshalltown, IA, Ruth and Ken Young of Klamath Falls, OR, Ted Grabe of Redmond, OR, Tim and Sue Grabe of Portland, OR and Anne Grabe of Corvallis, OR; and several great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother and his wife Henry Marvin and Frances Grabe.
