Greg was born on November 13, 1949, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Earle and Betty (Johnson) Puttmann. He was raised on the family farm near Pierson and graduated from Kingsley-Pierson Community School in 1968. He continued his education at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa.
Greg served in active duty with the United States Army from March 1971 to March 1974, followed by three years in the Army Reserve. During his active-duty service, he was stationed at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) near Mons, Belgium, where he worked as a telephone technician with the communications and electronics unit.
On August 7, 1976, Greg married Linda Hansen at Morningside Presbyterian Church in Sioux City. Together, they made their home in rural Kingsley before settling in rural Pierson, where Greg lived the rest of his life and where they raised their family.
Throughout his working years, Greg was employed by various construction and industrial businesses. Most notably, he was a partner in Puttmann Farms as well as working for Beelner Service for more than 30 years. His time at Beelner's was much more than a job; it was also where he formed lasting friendships and went on daily adventures, creating many stories to share.
Greg's foundation in faith began during childhood at Salem Lutheran Church in rural Correctionville. He later became a longtime member of Morningside Presbyterian Church, now Faith United Presbyterian Church, in Sioux City, where he belonged for nearly 50 years. Greg sang in the church choir for many years and participated in numerous church groups and activities, including the Clipper Club couples' group and various committees. He also gave his time as a Cub Scout leader and youth baseball coach.
Always willing to lend a hand, Greg served his community in many ways. He worked as a substitute school bus driver, driving regular routes as well as taking students on field trips and to sporting events. Greg never knew a stranger and took a sincere interest in everyone he met. He generously and joyfully shared his time, talents, and abilities with those around him.
Greg found his greatest fulfillment in a hard day's work and in time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who he cherished. Attending their many sporting events, music concerts and theatre productions filled his heart with pride. He also liked reading, attending symphony performances, gardening and in his younger years, enjoyed photography, camping and skiing. Greg was exceptionally skilled at building and repairing nearly anything. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generous spirit, genuine curiosity about others, and steadfast devotion to his family, faith, friends, and community.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 50 years, Linda; his children, Alicia (Brett) Caspers of Ely, Iowa, and Kirk (Sara) Puttmann of Keota, Iowa; and his grandchildren, Johanna, Hewitt, and Everett Caspers, and Grace, Sophia, Elijah, and Jenna Puttmann. He is also survived by his brothers, Douglas (Sandy) Puttmann of Everett, Washington; Steve (Dianna) Puttmann of Dell Rapids, South Dakota; Jeff (Patty) Puttmann of Pierson; and Rich (JoEllen) Puttmann of Sioux City; brother-in-law Leonard Lensink; and siblings-in-law Lori, Paul, Brian, Tina, Susan, Rick, and Eileen. He is also survived by 17 nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.
