Larry Rex Klingensmith, age 84 of Washta, IA passed away Friday, June 5, 2026 at Accura Healthcare of LeMars, IA.
The family will be holding a Celebration of Life gathering in Larry’s shop at the family farm. Friends and visitors arewelcome to join us beginning at 5:30 p.m. on July 11 - three days shy of Larry’s birthday.
Larry was born July 14, 1941 at Grand Meadow, IA, the son of Rex and Elma (Nafe) Klingensmith. He was raised andeducated at Grand Meadow and attended Grand Meadow school, graduating in 1959. On November 13, 1963 he was inducted into the US Army and served in Germany until his honorable discharge on October 22, 1965. He then movedback home to farm with his dad.
On July 30, 1966, Larry married Penny Vining at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Through this union, he gained two stepsons, Ty and Tron. Together, Larry and Penny welcomed their youngest son, Terry. The couple made their home on a farm near Grand Meadow, where they built a life centered on family and hard work.
Larry found joy in raising livestock and farming the land. He loved time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In his spare time, Larry also enjoyed going for a drive, watching old westerns, and visiting with friends and neighbors.
Survivors include his wife, Penny of Washta, IA; stepson, Tron Klingensmith of Phoenix, AZ, and his children, Kyle & Nicole; stepson, Ty (Sveta) Flewelling of Orlando, FL, and their children, Diana (Scott) Mitchell, Wesley & Danil; son, Terry (Carey) Klingensmith of Kingsley, IA, and their children Evan (Daria) & Cassie (Brandon); 6 great-grandchildren,Caden, Eva, Klain, Cooper, Hattie, & Lyla; one sister, Betty Elser of Fresno, CA; sister-in-law, Darla Rock of Pierson, IA;brother-in-law, Wyman Vining of Denver, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents Rex & Elma; two sisters, Twila “Mae” (Keith) Klaschen, Gail (Roger) Chinn; brothers-in-law, Ray Elser and Jim Rock; sister-in-law, Lavonne Vining.
