Roger Gene Hartman, the son of Walter Hartman, Jr. and Fern LaVerne (Sturtevant) Hartman, was born March 7, 1948 in Le Mars, Iowa. He grew up on a farm west of Kingsley and graduated from Kingsley-Pierson High School in 1966. While in high school he enjoyed participating in football and baseball.

After high school, Roger attended college at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, South Dakota for two years and then transferred to Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa where he acquired his degree in architecture. From there he moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he began his own architecture business in 1971 and was still working when he was diagnosed with Lewy Bodies Dementia in 2022. He was licensed in seven states and specialized in architecture, planning, project management and historic preservation. He was also a member of several civic organizations in Sioux Falls.

Roger always loved to draw! Even in his early years, he drew pictures of Disney cartoon characters, buildings, people, nature. No one was surprised that he wanted to go to school to be an architect. He was very accomplished and established there in Sioux Falls and surrounding areas. He loved to drive through Sioux Falls and show anyone all the buildings/complexes he designed. Roger loved all of his family very much. One of his favorite activities was fishing with family and catching those huge walleyes. He also enjoyed boating, camping, building and remodeling houses, and golf. His friendly personality caused everyone to be drawn to him. He loved to make people laugh or smile.

He is survived by his son David Hartman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and five granddaughters, Justine Sorensen, Hailey Hartman, Kate Trebil, Ellie Hartman, and Taylor Hartman and two great granddaughters. He is also survived by his sisters Ardyce Highley of Kansas City, Missouri, and Janice (Leonard) Hansen of LeMars, Iowa, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Leland Hartman, brother-in-law Terry Highley, and his son Aaron Hartman.
