Willa Lee was born March 24, 1931 to Clark and Helen (Harder) Harmes in Sioux City, Iowa. She grew up on a farm south of Moville and lived there until moving to town when she started junior high school. She graduated from Moville High School and married Darrell Manker on May 28, 1950. They raised their family on a farm east of Moville until moving to town.
Willa enjoyed having the grandchildren spend time at the farm and playing with them. She enjoyed watching them play sports and all Woodbury Central athletics. She thought the world of her great-grandchildren and often asked what and how they were doing. When her grandchildren and great-grandchildren got older, they had fun playing games with her. She crocheted and knitted blankets for all her grandchildren and some of her great-grandchildren and knitted many dish rags until her eye sight no longer allowed. Willa enjoyed being outside walking, tending to her yard and flowers. She loved to shop and enjoyed being with friends. She and some of her friends took birthday treats to residents of the Kingsley Nursing Home once a month for many years. She helped serve noon lunches to seniors at the Senior Citizen Center in Moville. She also enjoyed going on bus trips with friends from Moville and Kingsley. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Moville and an active PTA member, while her children were in school.
She moved to Whispering Creek Independent Living Center in Sioux City, Iowa in September, 2014. She was very active participating in fun activities with the other residents. She had many good friends there. The residents and workers all knew her name and commented, “Your mother walks all the time.”
Later, she moved to Good Samaritan Home in Le Mars, Iowa. She enjoyed activities there and had many wonderful friends. Several of her friends said, “Your mom is a lovely lady”.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Darrell Manker; parents, father, Clark (Dick) Harmes and mother, Helen (Harder) Harmes; two sisters, Mary Lou Harmes and Keyth (Katie Harmes) Hiemstra and two brothers who died at birth.
Willa is survived by two daughters, Cathy (Rex) Wilcox of Naples, Florida and Susan (Don) Butcher of Le Mars, Iowa; a son, Greg and Tina (Stroud) Manker of Moville; eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; two nephews, Randy Hiemstra of Kingsley, Iowa and Ronnie Hiemstra of Arizona; other relatives and many friends.
